Long Gammon

Backgammon is a centuries old game played all over the world. Like many games, it has evolved over the centuries into the game it is today. Many offshoots have developed over time. One of the more interesting is Longgammon.

Longgammon is played with the same basic rules as backgammon; The major difference is that the 15 pieces all start on the opponent’s one-point.

All other rules are the same – the doubling cube is used, and gammons are double, backgammons triple.

Otherwise, it is the same as backgammon.

However, strategically it is much different. With all of your pieces in one spot, you have to pass by all of your opponent’s pieces on the way out of the set.

While the doubling cube is allowed, making a gammon in longammon is very difficult and a backgammon is almost impossible.

It is a good game to let players take a different approach while stretching the limits of their backgammon ability. It does take more time to finish than a traditional backgammon game.

Understanding longgammon means understanding some of the basics of backgammon itself. Some of the terminology involved:

The idea of any of the games is bear off all your pieces. “Bearing off” refers to the process. If you accomplish this with all of your pieces before you opponent gets any, it is called “backgammon.” This is VERY difficult to accomplish in longgammon.

The doubling cube is a dice with the following numbers: 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, 64. It is only used to double the stakes of the game. It is allowed in longgammon.

A Gammon occurs when a player manages to bear off all the pieces before an opponent can bear off a single. It is worth two points.

Longgammon utilizes all of these but does require much more movement in the pieces, which makes for a more drawn out game. But the strategy you develop from playing longgammon will help you in traditional backgammon. Beginners should learn the rules of traditional backgammon before branching out into longgammon. Longgammon requires the ultimate back game strategy. It is also a game where you try to get your pieces in strategic positions on the board as often as possible.

The back game strategy involved placing two or more pieces in an anchor position on an opponent’s home board. These are obstructions in an opponent’s board that hinders the opponent’s opportunities to hit them as they try to get home. In traditional backgammon, it is used when a player is significantly behind. But it can be effective on longgammon because of the starting positions of the pieces.

It is difficult to get gammoned or backgammoned, and it does reward a patient style of play.

Longgammon is a relatively new offshoot of backgammon, but backgammon is centuries old and can be traced to Persia. Its games have become increasingly interesting over the years, with three primary variants developing.

Modern backgammon is broken up into three primary games – backgammon, hypergammon and longgammon. These games are now often played for money on the Internet. There are also tournaments where players can play these games against others for money. Longgammon is a popular match play game because of its length and strategy.

Backgammon will continue to be a popular game, especially as it grows in stature among the gambling set. Those players will constantly look for variations to the original, so that being the case, look for longgammon to continue to grow in popularity.
